When Bruce Willis met Demi Moore
Back in the 1980s, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore were two of Hollywood’s brightest and fastest-rising stars.
Action hero Willis and Brat Pack member Moore each had their own legion of fans when fate brought them together at a film premiere. Their now famous meeting in 1987 created an instant spark that led to 13 years of marriage. Although, sadly, their romance ultimately faded, they have remained good friends and co-parents to their three children.

Following Bruce’s dementia diagnosis, when he braved the media spotlight to help other people with the condition, Demi has been supportive of her former husband, visiting him every week and helping him to celebrate his 70th birthday earlier this year.
Willis’ rise to stardom
Willis made his name in comedy crime series Moonlighting on the ABC television network in 1985, winning the role of wise-cracking detective David Addison from 3,000 other hopefuls. Starring opposite Cybil Shepherd as business partner Maddie Hayes, he became not only a respected actor, but also a heartthrob to female viewers.
Born in Idar-Oberstein in Germany in 1955, Willis came from a military family. His father, US soldier David Willis, from Idaho, had been deployed to Germany, where he married local girl Marlene Henz. As a child, Bruce overcame a stutter after joining a school drama club and facing the challenges head-on.
The family relocated to New Jersey, where he continued to act as a hobby, while working as a security guard at a nuclear power plant. He starred in various Off Broadway shows after moving to New York City, making a living from bartending and television commercials.
Moonlighting thrust him into the spotlight and he became a celebrity almost overnight, winning Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his portrayal of Addison during the show’s five-season run.
Moore’s early career
Born in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1962, Moore also came from a military family, as her father, Charles, was in the US Air Force. Her mother Virginia worked for a magazine distribution company, but the couple separated when Demi was a baby and she was brought up by her stepfather.
Moore quit school in 1978, aged 16, to take a job as a receptionist at film studio 20th Century Fox, while also joining Elite Modelling Agency. After taking acting classes, she won guest roles in NBC series WEB, about life in the television industry, and CBS courtroom drama Kaz.
Her first big screen role was in the 1981 sports film, Choices, playing Corri, girlfriend of lead character John Carluccio, a hearing-impaired footballer. She also played reporter Jackie Templeton in soap opera General Hospital in 1983, before her career took off in the 1984 comedy film, Blame It on Rio, when she starred as teenager Nikki Hollis opposite Michael Caine as her father, Matthew.
A succession of hit films followed, including About Last Night and One Crazy Summer. Moore established herself as a member of the Brat Pack – the nickname for a group of young Hollywood actors in the ‘80s, based on their 1950s predecessors, the Rat Pack, led by Frank Sinatra. Fellow members included Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald and Emilio Estevez, whom she met on the set of 1985 coming-of-age drama St Elmo’s Fire.
First meeting
After dating and getting engaged, Moore and Estevez starred together in the 1986 romantic crime caper Wisdom. Estevez made his name in the 1987 action comedy, Stakeout, as Detective Bill Reimers, opposite Richard Dreyfuss’s Detective Chris Lecce. The “buddy cops” plot saw them staking out a waitress after her ex-boyfriend escaped from prison.
Moore and Estevez arrived at its premiere party in August 1987 as Hollywood’s golden couple. Despite being with her fiancé, however, Moore was famously pictured on the red carpet, looking resplendent in a black evening gown and smiling warmly at Willis, distinguished in his tuxedo and bow tie, when they first met.
Willis immediately made an impression by being charming and confident, and the chemistry between them was obvious. The romance between Moore and Estevez had reportedly already started to cool by this time, so it was no surprise when press reports confirmed they had gone their separate ways soon afterwards.
Once Moore became a free agent, she and Willis reconnected and started dating. Afterwards, she said to reporters she found him “just so ready to embrace and give me love”.
Marriage and children
After a whirlwind romance, they married on 21st November 1987, at the Golden Nugget Hotel in Las Vegas – a spontaneous wedding, according to Moore, after they had been joking about getting married on the flight over. As they wandered around the gambling tables, Bruce suddenly said, “I think we should get married!”
Moore realised he was no longer joking and they tied the knot there and then. A month later, they held a formal second ceremony for family and friends, officiated by rock and roll singer Little Richard. The couple went on to have three daughters: Rumer in August 1988, Scout in July 1991 and Tallulah in February 1994.
Both actors’ careers reached new heights, with Bruce starring in the Die Hard action franchise and Demi winning the biggest roles of her career in the supernatural romance, Ghost, and legal drama, A Few Good Men. They also starred together for the first time in the thriller, Mortal Thoughts, in 1991.
In 2000, the show business world was left reeling when Hollywood’s most successful couple divorced after 13 years of marriage. Primarily, the strain of their busy careers was cited as a contributory factor. However, they remained friends and co-parented their children, an arrangement that remained successful even after they both remarried.
Over the years, they have supported each other’s careers, with Moore attending the premiere of her ex-husband’s film, Bandits. He reciprocated the gesture by attending her book launch. Later, Moore said she was “proud” of the way they handled their divorce, never using the kids as weapons and working through issues amicably.
Bruce Willis health
Sadly, in March 2022, Willis revealed he had been diagnosed with aphasia, a degenerative condition that impacts a person’s cognitive functions, including their ability to speak. A joint statement from his family, including Moore, revealed the actor was retiring from the career he loved as a result.
Bruce Willis’ last film, released in 2023, was futuristic sci-fi thriller Assassin, in which he played Valmora, the leader of a military corporation that invented a dangerous microchip. Moore won a Golden Globe Best Actress Award for her 2024 horror film, The Substance. Her character, Elisabeth Sparkle, a faded former film star, discovers a youth serum, with horrific results.
In February 2023, it was revealed Willis’ condition had worsened, unfortunately, leading to frontotemporal dementia. Moore visits her former husband regularly in Los Angeles and has been supportive of his wife Emma Heming, whom Willis married in 2009, and their two children.
Moore, who was married to actor Ashley Kutcher between 2005 and 2013, has helped their families to bond, enabling Willis to spend time with his five children, describing them as being like a large “tribe”. They all celebrated his 70th birthday together on 19th March 2025.
Forever remembered as Hollywood’s golden couple of the 1990s, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis have proved some family bonds will never be broken.
