When Christina Aguilera met Kelly Osbourne
Few celebrity spats have captured the public’s imagination quite like the Christina Aguilera and Kelly Osbourne feud of the early 2000s.
On one side, you had Aguilera, a Grammy Award-winning pop icon known for her powerhouse vocals, bold fashion statements and unapologetic attitude. Rising to fame in the late 1990s with hits like Genie in a Bottle and Dirrty, she became a defining voice of her generation, with musical genres spanning pop, soul and jazz.

On the other stood Osbourne, the sharp tongued daughter of rock legend Ozzy. Known for her punk style and unfiltered commentary, she became a standout personality on the family’s groundbreaking MTV reality show The Osbournes and released a number of pop-punk albums, later becoming a regular panellist on TV show Fashion Police.
How did the famous feud begin?
Both icons were products of the MTV era with big personalities and when they clashed, it was the stuff of tabloid legend. The pop star and reality TV rebel were no strangers to being in the spotlight.
Aguilera went from Disney Channel star to global sensation practically overnight, while Osbourne burst onto the scene in similar fashion in the chaotic reality show that showcased the daily lives of the heavy metal dynasty.
The Christina Aguilera and Kelly Osbourne feud can be traced back to one particularly scathing moment on The Osbournes. In an episode that aired in the early 2000s, Kelly said frankly how much she hated Christina’s holiday album, My Kind of Christmas, also expressing her personal dislike of the singer at the same time.
Known for always speaking her mind, Osbourne’s spontaneous decision to do so about Aguilera sparked the feud that was to rumble on for around 20 years. She even added, dramatically, that Aguilera’s music made her want to “stab herself”. The comments weren’t just harsh; they felt personal, especially since they came without provocation. Christina had never said anything publicly about Kelly, which made the insults even more shocking. The public was hooked, as it was more than just a little banter between celebrities – it felt like a full-on war.
Never one to bite her tongue, Aguilera responded in kind in an interview with Access Hollywood in 2003. She claimed she had confronted Kelly Osbourne at a nightclub, but said scathingly that Kelly backed down and had “nothing to say” when challenged directly. This revelation of an attempted confrontation revealed the drama had spilled far beyond the confines of reality TV. However, events at the 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards finally escalated the discord into pop culture history.
The prestigious televised ceremony became the setting for the most infamous chapter of the long-running debacle. Aguilera was one of the night’s biggest stars hosting the event, performing live and appearing in several comedy sketches. Behind the scenes, tensions were boiling. Reports claimed Aguilera refused to walk the red carpet if Osbourne, who was appearing as a guest video jockey, was present. It was a power play that didn’t go unnoticed by the media, or by Osbourne.
Later, a pre-recorded comedy sketch aired in which Aguilera threw darts at a photo of Osbourne’s face. It was portrayed as cheeky, but was also undeniably aggressive. Osbourne’s response was swift and cutting. Taking the stage to present an award, she said, “If Christina Aguilera has to resort to throwing darts at my head after everything she’s achieved and done, she’s a really sad, sorry person, and I take it as a complete compliment.” Christina didn’t miss a beat and replied, “Honey, if you can dish it out, you’ve got to learn how to take it back,” – a single line that became one of the most quoted retorts of the awards season.
From drag queen to shoe closet
What makes the feud so memorable isn’t just the dartboard incident: it’s the way it dragged on for years, ricocheting between interviews and TV appearances. Osbourne reportedly said she’d “seen drag queens who looked better than Christina”. At one point, Aguilera described Osbourne as a “sad, angry little child”.
When Aguilera became friendly with Kelly’s brother Jack, this sparked even more tension. At one point, even Kelly’s parents got involved. Sharon Osbourne said drily that listening to Christina’s music made her want to “scratch” and “abuse” herself. Then came the moment that added a whole new layer of irony. In 2008, Christina Aguilera bought the Osbournes’ family home in Beverly Hills — the same one that featured in The Osbournes series. She reportedly turned Kelly’s old bedroom into a lavish shoe closet to house her 750 pairs of shoes! If that’s not the ultimate celebrity insult, what is?
Years later, Osbourne fired off another shot on E’s Fashion Police, when she commented on Aguilera’s weight gain, saying, “She called me fat for years. Now you’re fat too,” and later added, “I’m sorry, but I stand by that.”
Did Christina and Kelly meet before the feud?
Despite their overlapping social circles and MTV fame, there’s no official account of a friendly meeting between the two before things soured. It’s safe to say their first real interactions were steeped in drama that quickly became public property. For all the verbal jabs and TV show moments, there remained one unanswered question for years: could they ever move past the bad blood?
After around two decades of animosity, something unexpected happened. In 2022, at a Christian Dior fashion show, Aguilera and Osbourne finally sat down and had a real conversation. Just like that, the years of insults melted away. According to Kelly, they discovered that they actually liked each other. “We were pitted against each other in the media for so many years that we both thought we didn’t like each other,” she said in a 2023 interview. “Then, we actually sat down together at a Dior show and ended up really liking each other.” It was the famous meeting that fans never saw coming. The moment when two of pop culture’s most opinionated women realised that their discord was built more on media narrative than personal animosity.
Today, both have moved on; Aguilera, 44, continues to evolve as a performer and advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, while Osbourne, 40, has found her stride in fashion, commentating and motherhood.
Why the feud still fascinates us
In many ways, the public discord represents a relic of a different time in celebrity culture. The early 2000s thrived on conflict and the media loved to pit women against each other for headlines. What makes this particular quarrel stand out is how personal it felt with the insults, reactions and back-and-forth comments all broadcast in real time to a captivated audience.
Now, as fans look back, a viral tweet in 2024 reminded everyone just how intense it all was, but also how times have changed. “The girls these days would never allow themselves to throw THIS much shade,” one observer joked – and they’re probably right.
Thankfully, the story didn’t end in bitterness. It ended in growth, understanding and maybe even a bit of laughter between two women who had once hurled verbal insults at each other.
